The 5 Most Common Questions Customers Ask Us
Q: Do I have to completely change out my locks to get new keys?
A: No. About 98% of the time, you do not have buy new locks to get "new" or different keys. We can re-key your existing locks to a completely new set of keys so the old keys no longer work and it is substantially less expensive then purchasing new locks.
Q: How long does it take to have my whole house re-keyed to a new set of keys? A: The average home usually has about 6 to 8 locks; 3 or 4 knob locks and 3 or 4 deadbolt locks. In most cases, the average time to complete the re-key is about an hour to an hour and a half. Obviously if you have more locks, it will take a little longer. But in most cases, it's NOT an all day affair and, ALL of our work is completed at your location, NOT off site.
Q: How often should I lubricate my locks & why? A: If you are a seasonal resident, we recommend spraying all your locks before you leave for home in the spring with WD-40 ONLY. Upon your return to FL in the fall, it should be done again. We do NOT recommend the use of ANY oil based lubricant or graphite, be it powder or liquid, because it is a much heavier consistency and, will eventually "gum" up the inside of the lock causing future problems. Graphite works well in the Northern States but not down here in Florida.
With the high dew point and humidity, eventually the graphite will "cake" around the moving parts inside the lock and create problems. If you are a year round resident, we recommend at least 2 times each year.ALL locks have moving parts inside and like a car engine, they need lubrication to keep the parts moving freely, thus eliminating trouble.
Q: I now have several different keys that fit the doors in my home. Can I have all of the lockskeyed to 1 key? A: Yes. About 98% of the time, we can re-key all the existing locks on the same key. Once in a while, we run into a case where the key will not fit into a lock. Then we just replace that one particular lock so 1 key will fit all the locks.
Q: I just moved into a new house. Why should I have all the locks re-keyed to a different set of keys? A: If it's a brand new, never lived in house, youDEFINITELYwant to re-key the entire house to a new, different set of keys, ASAP after closing. Reason being, the general contractor and ALLthe sub contractors who built your home still have "working" keys and those keys are DIFFERENT from yours. 95% of the time at closing, you are given ONLY 2 KEYS and your under the falsehood of thinking you have the only keys for the house... NOT TRUE! Most Realtors and closing agents, are not aware of this and think only the general contractor's key will no longer work; such is not the case. So you want to re-key as soon as possible.
SPECIAL NOTE OF INTEREST:
If you purchased a re-sale home and it is more then 2 or 3 years old, youDEFINITELY want to re-key the entire house ASAP after closing. Again reason being, usually everybody and their brother has a key; neighbors, friends and relatives of the previous owners; the list goes on and on. You would be surprised who has keys you don't know about. So in either case, don't take any unnecessary chances on your safety and security. It's well worth the piece of mind and in most cases, relatively inexpensive.
